Uru Shipyards

The Uru Shipyards in Beypore, Kozhikode, Kerala, India, are renowned for constructing large wooden ships known as urus. These urus are a significant aspect of Kerala’s shipbuilding heritage and have been sought after for more than 1,500 years.

The construction process is meticulous and can last for more than a year, requiring the expertise of 30–50 skilled workers. The revival of the uru construction industry can be attributed to centuries of trade between Western India and the Middle East. Historically, urus were sold to Persian Gulf countries as merchant vessels. As these countries have become wealthier, there has been a rising demand for urus equipped with modern amenities for luxury cruising. Qatar is a frequent buyer of urus.

The urus were originally cargo ships, but modern versions now resemble luxury yachts complete with bedrooms, kitchens, navigation systems, and powerful engines. These vessels are constructed using teak wood for the hull and rosewood and jackfruit timber for the interiors. Traditional shipbuilders known as Khalasis utilize basic carpentry tools and fine cotton thread to assemble the planks, refine the edges, and seal any gaps.
