Poonjar Palace is a tourist destination known for its architectural style, craftsmanship, collection of artifacts, and its historical significance. It is believed to be around 600 years old. This was once the palace of the erstwhile Poonjar dynasty, also known as the Edavaka rulers.
The architecture here is unique. It reminds visitors of a vivid picture of a bygone era. The construction architecture is of the ancient Chera and Pandya kingdom time. Wood, granite, laterite tile, and clay tiles are the major parts of this architecture.
Entering this palace will make one feel that they have stepped into the past. The vast collection of artifacts plays a crucial role in it. Some of the majorly valued artifacts here include ‘Droni’- a unique and effective wooden treatment bed that is used for Ayurveda treatments. Also, the Grand chandeliers, the ‘Chuttuvilakk’ – the lamps carved out in rocks, carved statues of Nataraja, palm-leaf engravings, a unique conch shell used in rituals, weapons, exquisite jewel boxes, lamps, palanquins, and the dancing form of Lord Shiva are major attractions of this place.
