Mananchira Lake

Mananchira Lake is a man-made freshwater pond located in the center of Kozhikode (Calicut) in Kerala, India. The lake covers an area of 3.49 acres (14,120 square meters) and is 130 meters long and 109 meters wide. It is supplied with water from a natural spring. The pond was originally constructed as a bathing pool by the feudal ruler of Kozhikode, Zamorin Mana Vikrama, in the 14th century. In the late 19th century, the Calicut municipal council converted the pond into a drinking water source.

The Mananchira Square park complex, which encircles the lake, was established in 1994 and has become a favored destination for picnics. The park is adorned with numerous statues of Malayalam writers donning traditional dhotis. Unfortunately, the lake has been contaminated by the disposal of municipal and household waste. The name “Mananchira” is derived from the Zamorin ruler Manadevan, formerly known as Manadevan’s Chira.
